A recipe bag full of tricks

“A full bag of tricks this month, including the most prehistoric looking fruit, custard apples! ” Iron Chef Shellie.

Knobbly ingredients were on order this month!

And we started with custard apples. They’re one of those ingredients that you see, but don’t often think to buy (or at least that’s our story). They’re generally found in a safe place up on the counter and wrapped carefully in tissue paper, creating a sense of delicacy.

Take a closer look, however, and the pale green skin covered in odd looking bumps and knobs, changes them from delicate, to downright bizarre.

Jerusalem artichokes are kind of in the same boat. They just seem a little foreign. And not related to the artichoke, we might add.

So we thought we’d send some in this month’s mystery bag.

Fragrant, in-season turmeric (also a knobbly little gem) and some fresh, crunchy hazelnuts were also included.

In Jo from Second Helping’s own words, “I love the versatility of this month’s ingredients. Savoury or sweet, naughty or nice; there were a lot of options.

And lots of recipe options is what we were given.

From a tasty dip to a spiced smoothie bowl to, wait for it, homemade Nutella scrolls (and yes you can DIY your own Nutella – you’re welcome) and a custard apple crumble, we’ve got yet another fantastically tasty collection of recipes for you to try.
