Melbourne's #1 Food Market

Cheesy Market Desserts

There’s no denying that fromage is certainly one of our favourite produce items at Prahran Market (we plan a whole festival around it each year after all!). But if you’re more of a sweet tooth than a savoury lover, then you’ll be glad to hear that there are some delicious Market treats on display in Deli Arcade, Harvest Hall food market and Market Square.

From cheesecakes and cannoli, to ricotta cake or simply a cream cheese topped delight, there are plenty of cheesy desserts to tempt your tastebuds.

To help you out, here’s a list of our favourites that you’ll find on your next visit.

Say Cheese-cakes!

Fun fact – cheesecakes were made by ancient Greeks and were originally patties of fresh cheese pounded smooth with flour and honey, cooked on an earthenware griddle. It was in late medieval Europe that the cheesecake became a tart form with a pastry base.

There are plenty of cheesecakes on offer throughout Prahran Market, and all are just as delicious as the next. And the good thing about cheesecakes is you can eat them any day of the week – not just special occasions! Order yourself a slice to take-away the next time you’re doing a weekly shop, or surprise everyone at home with a whole cake for dessert.

You’ll find three types of cheesecake at Sweet Greek in the Deli Arcade and we find it impossible to decide between them. Choose from baked cheesecake, raw cheesecake or their renowned baklava cheesecake, which is just as pretty as it is delicious.

Stir the Pot has an amazing New York Cheesecake, but their unique Japanese take is a must-try. It’s light, airy AND gluten-free – winning!

Farini in Harvest Hall serves up a popular baked cheesecake made with ricotta, vanilla bean and lemon – the perfect afternoon pick-me-up, we say.

And if you’re wandering through Market Square, popular bakery Q Le BAKER has a delectable, flourless sour cream cheesecake made with lemon and vanilla.

You can’t go past Cannoli

Cannoli is one of Sicily’s best-known desserts (and for good reason!). The deep-fried cylindrical pastry shells are filled with sweetened whipped ricotta that’s flavoured with all sorts of different ingredients. Originally, they were created as a treat during Carnevale in Sicily, but now they’re enjoyed all year round across the globe.

Farini has become famous for their amazing cannoli, so if you fancy something a little lighter than cheesecake, we recommend you head here. Made in house, the cannoli have perfectly crunchy shells and ricotta fillings that range from traditional Sicilian to chocolate, pistachio and more. It is almost impossible to stop at one!

Must-try Ricotta cake

While Sweet Greek has so many yummy desserts, their ricotta cake is one worth breaking your diet for. Light, delicious and not too sweet, it is an ideal morning or afternoon tea treat.

Cream cheese topped desserts

If you love a cake with a cream cheese topping, head to Deli Arcade and feast your eyes on Stir the Pot’s pear and pistachio cake and Sweet Greek’s delicious carrot cake.

And while you’re at it, be sure to check out Jasper Coffee in Harvest Hall for their range of cakes including carrot cake, lemon delicious, Persian cake and rhubarb cake – all the perfect accompaniment to your coffee.

Now that you know where the most tempting desserts are hiding in the Market, enjoy wandering the aisles and feasting your eyes on all that sweet, cheesy goodness. But we should warn you – once you get a taste you’ll be coming back for more!
