Take-home shortcuts (you’re welcome)

We all know that Prahran Market is a food lovers’ happy place; with everything under the one roof for preparing any dish from scratch at home. What you may not know is that lots of our Traders offer delicious meals that are ready for your table with little or no effort from you. As we like to say, what’s better than a home-made meal? A home-made meal made by someone else!

To get your taste-buds watering here’s just some of the tasty things on offer. Just remember that phoning ahead is always recommended for larger orders. You can bring your own containers in too.

Stir The Pot, Deli Arcade

If you’re after healthy, nutritious and a particular dietary focus including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, lactose-free, FODMAP and more, you’ll find heaps of choices here. With a fixed seasonal menu and daily changing dishes, all prepared in-store, Stir the Pot offer dishes ready to go, larger orders on request and bespoke catering. When we dropped by, their single-serve take-home packs caught our eye, including Mexican Chicken Burrito, Butter Chicken, Thai Green Curry, Butter Bean and Veg Stew, and Pumpkin Dhal, all served with rice. They also had some lovely hearty salmon fish cakes which would be just perfect with some of their Ancient Grain Salad and a few greens.

Sweet Greek, Deli Arcade

If delicious home-style Greek food is your flavour, Sweet Greek has a whole range of seasonal dinner options. Traditional in-store made dishes such as Moussaka, Keftethes, Yemista, and Pastitsio will warm the tums of the whole family. There are plenty of seasonal sides as well like Roasted Cauliflower, Baked Butter Beans, Roasted Brussel Sprouts and Almond Salad. You will not be able to resist not picking up a dessert too! Catering as well as larger orders welcome here too.

Mussel Pot, Market Square

For just $10-13, you can get 1kg of cleaned mussels with your choice of Mussel Pot’s delicious sauces (we love the coconut chilli – a delicious and impressive winter warmer). This will serve two and take just minutes to do. Simply put half of the mussels with half of the sauce into a saucepan over medium heat and take out the individual mussels as soon as they open. Then cook the other half the same way. As the mussels open, they will release salt and water making a delicious broth. Grab your favourite loaf to dip at Q Le BAKER or Noisette and that’s dinner solved.

Falafel Man, Market Square

There is almost always a queue at Falafel Man and if you have tried their falafels, you’ll know why. Known for falafel pockets and plates, you can actually buy a box of falafels to take home and re-heat along with a box of the freshly made salads – a delicious and healthy dinner. But get there by early lunchtime or they are likely to have sold out.

Cleo’s Deli, Deli Arcade

Home-made dishes are aplenty at Cleo’s, and you can often see (and smell) them being made behind the counter. Beef Lasagne, Beef Moussaka, Veg Lasagne, Quiche Lorraine, Chilli Con Carne Pie, Chunky Beef Pie, and Chicken and Leek Pie sit are all on offer to quickly heat at home. The problem is what to choose, and again – they don’t last long!

Fresh Pasta Shop, Deli Arcade

This place says exactly what it is. You’ll find freshly made pasta and gnocchi of all kinds, and sauces to quickly cook or reheat at home. Or, if boiling a pot is still a reach too far, grab one of their family sized lasagne or servings of Spaghetti Bolognaise, Mushroom and Leek Risotto, and Gnocchi with Pesto in various sizes. Don’t go miss the parmesan wedges – and garlic bread!

Anatolia Gozleme Kitchen, Harvest Hall

For traditional Turkish dinners, Anatolia Gozleme Kitchen is the place to go. Dishes like Lamb Kofte and Potato Casserole, Eggplant and Lamb Casserole, Stuffed Eggplant (veg or lamb), Cabbage Rolls, all made freshly on-site. The Turkish Bread is made daily and is the perfect accompaniment.

Farini, Harvest Hall

Pizza your thing? At Farini you’ll find freshly made Roman-style pizzas, all ready to eat with just 4-5 minutes of heating. There are at least four different pizzas each day, including at least one vegetarian option included. And, if you have a large family or entertaining, you can request a whole party tray. The Arancini are to die for, not to mention delicious hand-filled cannoli, so re suggest not leaving without three courses at least.

D&J Poultry, Bracher Arcade

If you fancy a roast but don’t want to bother with the prep. and cooking involved, head to D&J Poultry for their ready-roasted chickens. Delicious with veg or salad, they are perfect for mid-week or weekend dinners. And, if you plan ahead and buy a bit extra, you may have some left for roast chicken sandwiches the next day – yum!

Barossa Fine Foods, Deli Arcade

Barossa Fine Foods is another destination for a ready-made roast. Expect to find roasts such as pork hock and pork belly cooked and ready to take home. They also have a range of pies and quiches – family and individual-sized – like Mushroom and Country Cheddar pie, Chicken and Mushroom Pie, Braised Beef Shepherd’s Pie and Pumpkin Leek and Feta Quiche.

Q Le BAKER, Market Square

If everyone in the family loves their own pie, another option is Q Le BAKER. The famous bakery makes individual pies such as Veggie Chilli Con Carne and Beef Bourguignon as well as quiche and Pork and Apple Sausage Rolls.

Neil’s Meats, Bracher Arcade

Speaking of pies, Neil’s Meats have recently added pies to their range. Made with their own Wagyu Beef, you can be sure for a tasty and tender filling. All prepared and ready to just pop in the oven when you get home. Or, if you are looking for a smaller option, try their new Cornish or Pork and Fennel Sausage Rolls.

Hagen’s Organics, Bracher Arcade

We also can’t go past the Beef and Guinness Pie at Hagen’s Organics. A great pie for the whole family, using their own Hagens product.

Kooks Kitchen

Kooks is the perfect place to go for salads on the side or as the main event. They are all vegan too. Right now we’re eating the grilled sweetcorn with zucchini & squash, brown rice, black beans, kale & chilli, as well as the harissa pumpkin with quinoa, roast peppers, Medjool dates, cashews & pepitas. Just delicious.

See, we get it, we really do – the mid-week meal rotation can be a tough act to maintain. Next time you don’t feel like making dinner from scratch, head to Prahran Market and let our Traders do it for you. Your tastebuds (and your busy schedule) will thank you!
