See you at the Market!

Vegan Eats at Prahran Market

Wednesday 5th June 2019

As even the most dedicated vegans know, it can be tough making time every day to fix yourself a decent work-week lunch. And for all of us, the risk of a lunch-rut remains real!

So we put together this roundup of our favourite grab-and-go vegan eats here at Prahran Market, just to give you a little inspo for when that lunchtime hunger strikes.

Cult-worthy Falafel

It’s very hard to beat our Falafel Man’s secret recipe for deliciousness!  Everything here is vegan so the choice is yours, with falafel cooked fresh while you wait, and served with an assortment of salads that change daily.  Our favourite way to falafel is ‘The Works’: four falafels, dips, all the salads and flatbread for $9.90. Pro-tip is to come early – they usually sell out!

Located in Market Square.

Seasonal Salad Combo

Kooks Kitchen is a 100% plant based salad bar, with a seasonally changing lineup of ready-to-go salads, along with a range of dressings, sauces, and hot extras. We’re talking hand-made, hearty and utterly delicious, packed full of fresh, flavoursome ingredients. And there are heaps of vegan options to choose from. Make like us and opt for a Kooks Combo – you get a hot item, a condiment and two salads for $14. At the moment, we’re loving the Crispy Mushroom with Spicy Romesco Salsa and the Broccoli & Kale (with quinoa, freekeh, spring onion, peas and herbs) and the Roasted Cauliflower (with chickpeas, golden raisins, flaked almonds and fried shallots). So good.

Wholesome Goodness

One of our newest Traders, Stir the Pot, caters specifically for dietary requirements and food preferences in their range of grab-and-go and take home meals made with love. Current vegan options include a delicious Roast Vegetable and Lentil Soup, Pumpkin Dahl, and Butter Bean and Vegetable Stew with a range of salads too. Pro-tip is the $10 lunch box (with Dahl and Rice as one of the options – nice!) What’s more, Stir the Pot is open on Mondays and Wednesdays when the Market is closed, so just head for the Commercial Road entrance.

Located in Deli Arcade; also enter from Commercial Road.

Stacks of Deliciousness

Everything is homemade at Mama Marija’s Café, and there are some delicious vegan options on the menu – for eating in or taking away, from all day breakfast through to lunch. Marija makes all the food in the Café kitchen and several of the dishes hail back to her Balkan roots. Think seasonal winter warmers like fresh vegetable soup and healthy smoothie bowls. Or make like us and opt for the Vegan Stack ($19) – a mountain of grilled onion, tomato, mushrooms and avocado served on focaccia with asparagus, accompanied with a grilled ajvar relish and Mama’s homemade beetroot puree – yum! Definitely as ‘gram-worthy as it sounds. Also, open on Mondays and Wednesdays!

Hearty Greek

The range of cakes and sweet treats are TDF but did you know that Sweet Greek also sells grab-and-go meals and take home eats – and lots of these are vegan? We’re swooning over everybody’s favourite Cypriot Salad, and Whole Roasted Cauliflower with grated Greek Hard Cheese and Sweet Paprika. But it’s a tough call between those and the roasted vegetable salads and Roasted Sweet Pumpkin with homemade Tahini Yoghurt Sauce. Yummo. Prices vary.

Fresh Sushi

A delicious selection of vegan sushi is part of the range at Dragon Sushi. This is a family business and everything is made fresh in store that day. Our favourite vegan choice is the Vegetable Hand Roll, $2.50. With carrot, cucumber, lettuce, avocado and tofu it is full of taste and texture! If you are looking to get a few make the most of Dragon Sushi’s all-day special – four hand rolls for $8.99.

Juice Frenzy

Head to the Sweet and Nut Shop or Seoul Salon and make yourself up a fresh juice, made to order. There’s an array of the freshest fruit and veg in the fridge that you can choose from, or you can let the team choose for you. We love apple, carrot, beetroot, orange, celery, lemon and ginger – perfect start to the day or a great mid-afternoon pick me up.

Located in Harvest Hall and Market Square, respectively.

A sweet treat

If you haven’t discovered the range of vegan, dairy and gluten free sorbets at Fritz Gelato, then you’ll also thank us for this one. Think lush, creamy traditional Italian-style, made from quality ingredients with true fruit flavours. Even in winter, if there’s just a little spot in the winter sun, one scoop of Sour Cherry & Pomegranate Sorbet can turn even the biggest frown upside down.

Where’s the Cheese?

If you’re like us and like to be prepared for mid-afternoon cravings, then while you’re here make sure you also grab some of the delicious vegan cheeses and dips available from Ripe the Organic Grocer – the range is impressive and tasty! We’re also pretty taken by the vegan crackers at Pete N Rosie’s Deli, particularly the Cauli Crackers – made from real cauliflower. Now that should keep the hunger at bay.

Of course this is just a taste of some of the options here at Prahran Market – there are many other stalls and cafés to try so click here to see our full lists of eateries.
