Acaraje (Brazilian Street Food)

Try your hand at Brazilian street food with this traditional Acaraje recipe.

 

  • 2 cups black-eyed peas; soaked overnight
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1-1/2 tbsp ground pepper
  • 1 Tsp baking powder
  • 1 Tsp salt
  • Oil for deep frying
  1. Drain beans and rub the peel off the beans against a dry tea towel.
  2. Combine all ingredients in a blender or food processor.
  3. Beat for about 4 minutes or until you get a dough
  4. Pour the mixture in a mixing bowl.
  5. Stir this mixture regularly to avoid the water from separating out
  6. Heat the oil to 175°.
  7. Deep-fry spoon-fulls of dough for 8 minutes or until dark red.
  8. Pat them dry in paper towel.
  9. Serve immediately.
