Melbourne's #1 Food Market

Trader Profile: Barber of Prahran, Babak

You may not have noticed, but there’s a pretty slick fit-out on the Commercial Road side of the Market, tucked away near Shellz Brow Bar, and it’s the Barber of Prahran. Owner, Babak, has been in his trade for over 20 years and offers a long list of hair and grooming services for men, from an old-school shave to a contemporary fade-style cut.

We sat down with owner and Barber, Babak, to ask him a few questions about his business and being a part of the Prahran Market community.

What do you enjoy most about owning Barber of Prahran?

It’s nice to socialise and meet with different types of people. We have really nice, easy going and friendly customers, and I enjoy helping them look neat and sharp.

What got you into barbering and how long have you been in the game?

I have always liked creative things and it was my most passionate dream in life to become a barber. I have been a barber since 1999.

What is something people may not know about you or Barber of Prahran?

I have mastered all aspects of barbering skills, from old-school shaves to classic and modern haircuts. I qualified with a Certificate I and II in Persia and I also received a Wella certificate. I moved to Australia in 2012 and obtained my Certificate III in hairdressing, here.

What is the most common question you get asked?

I am always being asked why, when or how I came to Australia.

What do you love most about being at Prahran Market?

I love the fact that I can grab delicious coffee and food at the Market.

What do you love most about being a barber?

Caring for my clients and making them smile and feel happy after a fresh haircut or shave.

How do you think having a traditional barber available benefits the community?

I think it’s always nice for a gentleman to be well-groomed and smart. Barbers have been around for so many years and are a real part of the community and a long-standing tradition.

What have you found to be the most popular style/request/trend at the moment?

A zero skin fade with a beard trim lineup is the most requested style at the moment.
