We've improved our new home delivery service

COVID-19 Market Update

Thursday 12th March 2020

We will remain open as long as we are allowed and it’s safe to do so. We have implemented a number of additional measures to help ensure the safety of our traders and customers. These include (but are not limited to):

  • additional sanitation measures, including antibacterial gels in all public bathrooms
  • freestanding hand sanitation units
  • additional cleaning of touchpoints
  • additional information / training for traders to ensure we are operating in full accordance with the recommended protocols
  • social distancing floor decals to assist customers in keeping their space
  • highly visible, large-scale informative signage
  • extra security guards on-site
  • announcements over our PA system
  • live door count monitoring

We have implemented additional controls to further ensure the Market remains a safe environment for all customers and Traders at this time.

Dining-In: Cafes & Restaurants

Several of our cafes and restaurants are now offering dine-in options, and will be operating under the following Hospitality Guidelines issued by the State Government:

  • all staff are complying with safety and hygiene measures, including updated COVID-specific training and following health advice to stay home if they are unwell
  • businesses will record each patron’s contact details on booking or entry with a name and contact number (this applies to all diners at a table, not just the person who has booked)
  • businesses will be undertaking a deep clean of the premises prior to opening for dine-in, then implementing further hygiene and cleaning measures on a regular basis thereafter
  • seating will be setup to adhere to patron and table size limits to ensure social distancing of dining groups, with a maximum of 20 patrons in each separate dining space (not including staff). This allows for 1 diner per 4 square metres. Tables will not seat more than 6 diners and will be arranged no closer than 1.5 metres apart.
  • if an outbreak from the café/restaurant does occur, the business and Market Management will work with the Department of Health and Human Services to pass on any relevant contact information to assist with containment.
  • posters and signage giving information on max capacity and good hygiene practices will be displayed around each café/restaurant.

Please note that some eateries will not be offering a dine-in service at this time but will continue to offer their usual fantastic fare in takeaway form.  At the moment, they include Wasshoi, Mr Hoddle, Maker and Monger, Jasper’s Coffee and Market Lane Coffee.

We will provide updates on ‘new openings’ via our website and social channel, so stay in touch.

Market Square

For the moment, furniture configurations will remain as is in Market Square. We will be guided by the Government’s easing of restrictions in late June before making any changes to this area, including a decision on the return of our live weekend entertainment. We will be sure to communicate any updates via our website and social channels.

Bracher & Deli Arcades

Entry to Bracher Arcade during peak periods will now only be permitted from the Market Square end (near Ann’s Fish & Chips). Depending on crowd numbers, customers may also be asked to queue inside, out of the weather, to ensure we are able to monitor numbers and control movements. The doors closest to Gary’s Meats and Arthur’s Poultry will become an ‘Exit Only’, creating a one-way flow through the Arcade.

Deli Arcade Traders have pulled their displays and refrigerators a little further back to allow for additional shoppers to pass through the area while maintaining appropriate distancing.

Prahran Market Home Delivery

We will be providing further updates as and when the situation changes but, for now, its business as usual at the Market.

We are monitoring the issue of COVID-19 closely and will follow the advice of relevant health authorities in addition to being in daily contact with the City of Stonnington. We will continue to work closely with them and DHHS to ensure we are following the latest possible advice.

Our stallholders and their staff have been briefed accordingly to ensure they are implementing protective measures within their premises. Any stallholders or staff, who are unwell for any reason, have been directed to remain at home in self-imposed isolation until medically cleared to return to work. In addition, we continue to reinforce that any of our Market community who have returned from overseas trips must self-isolate for the required period of time, as required by Authorities.

As a customer, if you are experiencing symptoms and are in need of supplies, we ask that you please stay at home. A number of our traders already offer home delivery services; you can find this comprehensive list, here.

Things to keep in mind when shopping:

On your next Market visit, please remember to keep in mind the following:

  • Stay 1.5 metres from others during your shop (2.0 metres if space allows), especially when queueing at registers.
  • Use the additional hand sanitiser stations located throughout the Market.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds.
  • Cough or sneeze into a tissue or the crease of your arm, not your hands.
  • Place the tissue into a rubbish bin immediately after use and then wash and/or sanitise your hands.
  • If possible, pay using card instead of cash – almost all of our Traders are now ‘card only’.
  • Avoid touching fresh produce with your hands by using a bag to create a barrier.
  • If you have no intention of purchasing a product, don’t pick it up.
  • Avoid shopping in couples or groups by selecting one person per household to shop.
  • Shop for the essentials and fresh produce, as well as takeaway meals and stay home until your next shop.

Change in upcoming events

We have made the heartbreaking decision to cancel all events and entertainment for the foreseeable future.

Change in door procedures

Historically, our Market doors have always opened prior to our official 7 AM start time, on Market Days.

With an increase in orders and demand for stock, we need to keep the Market free of customers while there is more than usual heavy machinery trasversing Market Hall, to prevent an unnecessary accident and to ensure the shelves are at their fullest when the doors are opened.

If you have a delivery or are a member of staff and need to enter the market prior to 7 AM, please locate Security at one of the doors where they can provide you with access.

If you are a keen customer, please bear with us while our Traders complete their preperations for the day. All doors will be opened to the public at 7 AM.

Should you have any questions, please contact Market Management on 8290 8220 or email management@prahranmarket.com.au

If things change, we will communicate them via this page and our social media channels.
