COVID-19 Market Update

Thursday 19th November 2020

Update 11.01.2021: Return of Entertainment

Return to Music in Market Square

We are so excited to announce that this weekend, Saturday AND Sunday, live musicreturned to the Market Square.

As we only have a small stage area, we will initially stick to featuring solo artists.

We will also be installing suitable barriers between the performer and the audience and all patrons are expected to continue practicing social distancing within the Market Square at all times.

Cleaning staff will be supervising the area to ensure all tables and chairs are frequently sanitised between use.

Return of the Mexican Music Man

The Mexican Music Man will be returning to the Market Square on Thursday 14th January!  How exciting is that?

But to keep everybody safe, we’ve had to change how the performances will run.  We appreciate everybody’s support in the below measures;

  • A hand sanitising station will be located close to the Mexican Music Man.  All audience members will be required to sanitise their hands.
  • All children will be required to BYO musical instruments (no maracas at home? Try filling an empty water bottle with some uncooked rice or pasta).
  • There will be no sharing of the microphone between the Mexican Music Man and the audience.
  • Our Mexican Music Man will sit up on the stage and a barrier will be installed around him; as we all know social distancing is pretty difficult when it comes to little kids so creating a physical barrier is the best way to do this.
  • Parents; please social distance at all times, too.

Return of Thursday Face (Arm and Hand) painting

Our favourite facepainter, Alysha, will also be returning on Thursday the 14th of January.  In order to keep things Covid safe please note the following:

  • Painting will be only done on arms and hands.
  • Additional brush sets have been purchased to ensure that a new set will be used per child.  In the instance that all sets are used, an alcohol solution will be used to spray on the brushes so they can air dry and sanitise between children.
  • Water will be changed for every child
  • A 1.5m ‘bubble’ will be made around our ‘face-painter’ with bollards.  Only the ‘face painter’ and the child being painted are to be within this area at any one time.

And while we are all looking forward to the day that all of our Market Square entertainment can return in its original format, we are still excited to be able to take these steps forward!

If there are any further questions, queries or comments, please feel free to shoot us a DM.  Otherwise we look forward to seeing you at the Market.

Update 6.11.20

We are so thrilled to be able to welcome you back to the Market Square for eat-in dining of Market-purchased food items.

Changes to Market Access During Peak Periods

The Market has implemented additional controls,  to ensure the Market’s patronage does not exceed our prescribed density quotient in accordance with prescribed Directions.

These include appointing specific entry and exit doors during peak market times (mainly between 10 am and 2 pm on the weekend) to better manage the flow of patrons throughout the Market.

Please see below map.

The safety of our customers and Traders is our prime concern and Prahran Market has always looked at additional measures that can be put in place. Prahran Market will continue to work closely with the Department of Health and relevant local authorities to ensure we are continuing to comply with the latest regulations, guidance and advice.

Our thoughts are with everyone in our community at this stressful time.

Stay safe and we look forward to delivering our produce to your homes and seeing you at the Market.

The Prahran Market Family 💛

No Mask, No Entry Policy

As of 7 am Thursday 23 July, we will be enforcing a ‘No Mask, No Entry’ policy at Prahran Market. We are doing this as the health and safety of our Traders, their families, our customers and the wider community is of paramount importance to us. If you choose not to wear a mask, you are not permitted to enter the Market. If you do so, you may be asked to leave or refused entry.*

We thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

*Exemptions apply in accordance with Government policy. Masks include all approved face coverings as determined by the State Government of Victoria from time to time.

We will remain open as long as we are allowed and it’s safe to do so. We have implemented a number of additional measures to help ensure the safety of our traders and customers. These include (but are not limited to):

  • additional sanitation measures, including antibacterial gels in all public bathrooms
  • freestanding hand sanitation units
  • additional cleaning of touchpoints
  • additional information / training for traders to ensure we are operating in full accordance with the recommended protocols
  • social distancing floor decals to assist customers in keeping their space
  • highly visible, large-scale informative signage
  • extra security guards on-site
  • announcements over our PA system
  • live door count monitoring

We have implemented additional controls to further ensure the Market remains a safe environment for all customers and Traders at this time.

Cafes & Restaurants

Our amazing eateries and restaurants are still open for business, abiding by the new restrictions and offering takeaway services only. They need your support now more than ever, so we’ve rounded up a few of their takeaway menus to make deciding what to order for breakfast, lunch or dinner a little easier. Head here to check them out.

Market Square

For the moment, furniture configurations will remain as is in Market Square. We will be guided by the Government’s easing of restrictions in late June before making any changes to this area, including a decision on the return of our live weekend entertainment. We will be sure to communicate any updates via our website and social channels.

Bracher & Deli Arcades

Entry to Bracher Arcade during peak periods will now only be permitted from the Market Square end (near Ann’s Fish & Chips). Depending on crowd numbers, customers may also be asked to queue inside, out of the weather, to ensure we are able to monitor numbers and control movements. The doors closest to Gary’s Meats and Arthur’s Poultry will become an ‘Exit Only’, creating a one-way flow through the Arcade.

Deli Arcade Traders have pulled their displays and refrigerators a little further back to allow for additional shoppers to pass through the area while maintaining appropriate distancing.

Prahran Market Home Delivery

We will be providing further updates as and when the situation changes but, for now, its business as usual at the Market.

We are monitoring the issue of COVID-19 closely and will follow the advice of relevant health authorities in addition to being in daily contact with the City of Stonnington. We will continue to work closely with them and DHHS to ensure we are following the latest possible advice.

Our stallholders and their staff have been briefed accordingly to ensure they are implementing protective measures within their premises. Any stallholders or staff, who are unwell for any reason, have been directed to remain at home in self-imposed isolation until medically cleared to return to work. In addition, we continue to reinforce that any of our Market community who have returned from overseas trips must self-isolate for the required period of time, as required by Authorities.

As a customer, if you are experiencing symptoms and are in need of supplies, we ask that you please stay at home. A number of our traders already offer home delivery services; you can find this comprehensive list, here.

Things to keep in mind when shopping:

On your next Market visit, please remember to keep in mind the following:

  • Stay 1.5 metres from others during your shop (2.0 metres if space allows), especially when queueing at registers.
  • Use the additional hand sanitiser stations located throughout the Market.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds.
  • Cough or sneeze into a tissue or the crease of your arm, not your hands.
  • Place the tissue into a rubbish bin immediately after use and then wash and/or sanitise your hands.
  • If possible, pay using card instead of cash – almost all of our Traders are now ‘card only’.
  • Avoid touching fresh produce with your hands by using a bag to create a barrier.
  • If you have no intention of purchasing a product, don’t pick it up.
  • Avoid shopping in couples or groups by selecting one person per household to shop.
  • Shop for the essentials and fresh produce, as well as takeaway meals and stay home until your next shop.

Change in upcoming events

We have made the heartbreaking decision to cancel all events and entertainment for the foreseeable future.

Change in door procedures

Historically, our Market doors have always opened prior to our official 7 AM start time, on Market Days.

With an increase in orders and demand for stock, we need to keep the Market free of customers while there is more than usual heavy machinery trasversing Market Hall, to prevent an unnecessary accident and to ensure the shelves are at their fullest when the doors are opened.

If you have a delivery or are a member of staff and need to enter the market prior to 7 AM, please locate Security at one of the doors where they can provide you with access.

If you are a keen customer, please bear with us while our Traders complete their preperations for the day. All doors will be opened to the public at 7 AM.

Should you have any questions, please contact Market Management on 8290 8220 or email

If things change, we will communicate them via this page and our social media channels.
